Cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf children from the perspective of people with hearing loss
Nováková, Daniela ; Hradilová, Tereza (advisor) ; Komorná, Marie (referee)
This diploma thesis takes a look at cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf children from the view of adults with hearing loss. Although most hearing parents would most likely make use of the option to at least partially restore the hearing of their non-hearing child, that may not be the only possible solution for people with hearing loss. The aim of this thesis is to map and to clarify the views and opinions of people with hearing loss on cochlear implantation in prelingually non-hearing children. This thesis highlights the link between cochlear implants and the Deaf culture and community, where the topic of cochlear implantation is often controversial. The theoretical section introduces key topics regarding the aim of this thesis, especially the association between hearing loss and the Deaf community, communication of people with hearing loss, while also introducing basic information about cochlear implantation. In the practical section of the thesis, as part of the qualitative research, the statements of eleven respondents are quoted, which were obtained in the form of semi- structured interviews in Czech Sign Language. Based on the research, the author concludes that individuals with hearing loss appeal to the parents of prelingually deaf children to actively seek out all of the information...
Vestibular Function in Cochlear Implant Patients
Matějková, Michaela ; Čakrt, Ondřej (advisor) ; Koutná, Sára (referee)
Hearing loss is the most common sensory impairment. More than 5 % of the world's population suffers from disabling hearing loss, which affects approximately one third of people over the age of 65. In those cases where hearing aids are not a sufficient solution to these difficulties, cochlear implantation is the standard treatment. It replaces, at least in part, the function of the hair cells that are no longer able to stimulate the primary auditory neurons. However, there are concerns about the potential risk of impaired vestibular function and the development or worsening of non-vestibular problems such as tinnitus, vertigo and orofacial disorders. Aims: To provide a theoretical summary of fundamental information on the vestibular system and cochlear implantation and to assess vestibular and non-vestibular function after cochlear implantation and the impact of any abnormalities on patients' quality of life. Methods: All of the participants underwent subjective visual vertical examination, platform posturography and completed five questionnaires - Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, Facial Disability Index, Beck's Anxiety Inventory and Beck's Depression Inventory. Overall and partial results from platform posturography examinations were compared with a control group of...
Comprehensive care for a child with severe hearing impairment before and after cochlear implantation
Lonsmínová, Lenka ; Hádková, Kateřina (advisor) ; Bartoňová, Miroslava (referee)
The thesis deals with the process of cochlear implantation from diagnosis of hearing impairment to sound processor setup and hearing rehabilitation. In the theoretical part, attention is paid to defining the topic of hearing impairment, there are mentioned means of communication that can be chosen for communication with a child with hearing impairment, and we find a description of the development of spoken language in these children. Subsequently, attention is paid to the system of care for these children and finally the cochlear implant and the whole process of cochlear implantation is described here. The empirical part is based on interviews with mothers of children with severe hearing impairment who underwent cochlear implantation, and focuses primarily on informing parents about the whole process, establishing communication with the child before implantation and the course of subsequent hearing rehabilitation. The work aims to point out the need for early diagnosis of hearing loss, its correct compensation, establishing contact using a sensory accessible means of communication and the importance of long-term cooperation in setting up a sound processor and subsequent hearing rehabilitation. Another goal is to prepare material that will quickly and easily provide parents with basic information...

This thesis deals with the issue of speech therapy for children of early school age with the cochlear implant. General knowledge about hearing impairment and the possibility of compensation, different types of cochlear implants and especially about the specifics and methodology of following speech therapy are summarized in the theoretical part of the thesis. The practical part consists of research, realized through questionnaires. The research deals with the current situation of speech therapy for children of early school age with a cochlear implant, with a special focus on post-implantation rehabilitation and its complexity. The result of the research demonstrates the complexity of speech therapy only in some speech therapy workplaces. The result of the research also demonstrates that speech therapy is highly individual and depends completely on specific situation and personality and communication skills of each child with a cochlear implant. KEYWORDS Hearing impairment, cochlear implant, cochlear implantation, child with a cochlear implant, early school age, rehabilitation, hearing and speech developement, speech therapy.

Life of a family with a child with hearing impairment before, during and after cochlear
TUZOVÁ, Aneta
The bachelor thesis looks at the family with a hearing impaired child who is the user of a cochlear implant. It aims to find out the opinions, attitudes and feelings of parents before, during and after cochlear implantation. A cochlear implant is a technical aid that enables people with severe hearing impairment not only to perceive the sound, but also to understand the speech, and to improve or create their own speech skills. It has become hope where the hearing aids are not enough. Cochlear implantation is currently being carried out bilaterally. A candidate for cochlear implantation has to meet a number of conditions. Cochlear implantation is a process that is demanding both for a child with hearing impairment and his family. In order to meet the goal, qualitative research was carried out with four communication partners the mothers of children who have already undergone cochlear implantation. The data obtained during uncontrolled conversations with communication partners was processed using the focus group method, and subsequently evaluated. The research has brought a number of interesting facts mapping attitudes, feelings, and last but not least mother emotions during implantation. It turned out that for the communication partners the process of cochlear implantation was difficult, they did not feel informed sufficiently, they did not know what implant to choose, and during cooperation with some experts they lacked empathy, observation and also human approach. They have not always been supported by their families. The misleading views of some of the experts they met were not an exception. The results of the bachelor thesis can be benefit for parents who are considering the cochlear implantation for their child and lacking information, or to the general public who is interested in getting more information about this problem.
Children with Specific Language Impairment and Cochlear Implant
Volfová, Markéta ; Hádková, Kateřina (advisor) ; Kotvová, Miroslava (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with specific language impairment as a risk factor of cochlear implantation. This diagnosis may fundamentally disrupt the development of speech after cochlear implantation. The main aim of this work was identification and comparison of used communication systems of persons with cochlear implant and diagnosed with developmental dysphasia. We focused on the morphological-syntactic level of language as a part of verbal level of communication. A qualitative survey was carried out at elementary schools for the hearing impaired. The research sample consisted of five pupils of these schools. Pupils were selected based on their use of the cochlear implant, diagnosed specific language impairment and other factors. Required data was obtained on the basis of observation and through the subtests of the Diagnostics of Language Development test battery. The investigation has revealed that despite cochlear implantation the preferred and more frequently used communication system is sign language. All pupils in the research group are able to communicate through spoken language, but they need to complement and support it by at least some individual elements of the sign language. Morphological- syntactic level of spoken speech was striking for all of the pupils in the research group. Pupils...
